Throughout our guided meditation, we draw on a number of reflections from the book of Psalms – the Bible’s songbook.
Some address the situations, fears, and threats faced by the author. Others are songs of praise, offering messages of hope, joy and gratitude.
‘In peace I will lie down and sleep ... for you alone, the Existing One, make me dwell in safety.’
– Psalms, the Bible
The meditation carries a motif from the book of Psalms: ‘you, the Existing One, make me dwell in safety,’ taken from Psalm 4. Who is ‘the Existing One’? Like most of the Old Testament, the Psalms were originally written in Hebrew. The word for God used in the psalm is often translated as ‘Jehovah’ or ‘Lord’. In Hebrew, it means ‘the Existing One’: the true God.
Traditionally, many of the Psalms have been attributed to King David, who ruled Israel from around 1000–962 BCE. Although we can't safely say who the author of each and every psalm is, these words have spoken into the situations faced by people all around the world for thousands of years. You may be familiar with some well-known examples, like Psalm 23: ‘The Lord is my shepherd’.
So, why not see what these ancient words might have to say to you as you prepare for rest?
