‘Do not cling to events of the past or dwell on what happened long ago. Watch for the new thing I am going to do. It is happening already – you can see it now! I will make a road through the wilderness and give you streams of water there.’
- Isaiah, the Bible
This encouragement to look ahead, not backwards, was first directed at a tribe of ancient Israel in around 538 BCE. Swallowed up in the ever-expanding Babylonian Empire, people were taken from their homeland and relocated in Babylon, modern day Iraq. They lost everything: their homes, their security and their future.
And yet, in the challenging realities of their lives in another country, one of their prophets shared this message. It was a promise of life and a gift of hope – an encouragement not to stay stuck in the past but to look ahead to a brighter future. It promised pathways where there seemed no way through, and life-giving water where all seemed dry.
