Bible Society has its roots in Wales. It was in Wales that Mary Jones made her famous walk to buy a Bible in her own language – Welsh – and her determination to own a Bible she could read for herself inspired Revd Thomas Charles and others to establish the British and Foreign Bible Society in 1804.
Today we are still working to bring the Bible to life for both the Welsh-speaking and English-speaking populations in Wales. We are the main publisher of the Bible in Welsh, we have an active Welsh-speaking and English-speaking Open the Book team, and our visitor centre Mary Jones Pilgrim Centre in Llanycil, Bala, is making the story of Mary Jones, Thomas Charles, and Bible Society known to a new generation of tourists, and school groups.
We’re bringing the Bible to life in Wales, where the Bible Society began over 200 years ago, with contemporary Welsh translations, performing arts and an award-winning visitor centre.
Bible Society is the main publisher of the Welsh Bible. In 2014 the Beibl Cymraeg Newydd gyda Mynegair was published, and 2015 saw the publication in print of the newest Welsh Bible translation.

Open the Book was established in 1999 in Gloucestershire. With the work growing so rapidly in Wales, a need was seen for an officer to promote Open the Book and provide training through the medium of Welsh. Brand new resources were launched in 2023, and these have also been translated into Welsh.
With a clear gospel message and colourful illustrations, this is the perfect Easter gift for primary-age children in your family, church, school and community.

Bible Society has made a Welsh Bible app called ‘ap Beibl’. It is available for free on Android and iPhones, and can be accessed as a webpage. The most popular translations also have audio so you can listen too. It includes your favourite Welsh Bible translations, and also some texts you probably haven’t heard of, from the oldest ones to the most recent.
